This Redmond School District Team Spotlight is on Mary Geenan, the Library and Testing Coordinator at RHS!
Before being hired at the district, Mary volunteered in her children’s schools for years, spending time at Vern Patrick, Obsidian and Redmond High School. Mary started working for the district in 2008 in the RHS/Hugh Hartman campus library and office. She moved to the RHS main campus the following year and has been working there since.
In addition to managing all of the responsibilities in the library and media center at RHS, Mary serves as the school’s testing coordinator. In this role, she is responsible for assuring that students take the OAKS Tests they need to meet the state mandated requirements in order to qualify for an Oregon high school diploma. Mary also proctors the Career Technical Education (CTE) tests that are used to demonstrate the strengths of Redmond High’s CTE program. Beyond these tests, Mary is busy administering several other assessments for students.
“We administer tests like the ACT WorkKeys tests, which serve multiple purposes. They are an OAKS equivalent (Math and Reading) which provides another opportunity for our kids to meet the Essential Skills in a different format. They also serve as an addition to their career portfolios and can lead to a NCRC (National Career Readiness Certificate) which will make our kids even more attractive to employers nationwide. We even offer placement tests for our students who are planning to attend community colleges with the Advanced Diploma program. The ability to do this here in Redmond means one less trip that our kids would have to make over the pass. I’m pretty excited about all the new opportunities we’re developing for the kids. I mean that’s why we’re all here, right?”
When asked what she finds the most rewarding about her work, Mary shares,
“I love seeing how the students change and mature through their High School years. I love helping them in any way that I can. The people at RHS are warm and caring and I think we all have the kids at heart and make a great team which translates to a great place for our kids.”
Nicole MacTavish, Redmond High School Principal shares,
“Mary goes out of her way, every single day, to help Redmond High School students and staff in any way she can. Mary literally interacts with every student and every staff member here at Redmond High School, and her positive, can-do attitude is infectious. Mary has an amazing work ethic and applies herself 100% to every project – no matter how big or small. Mary’s proactive nature, her warm and genuine spirit, and her heartfelt commitment to student success shows in everything she does. I am so thankful, and feel so fortunate, to have the opportunity to work with Mary Geenen! I can’t think of a better ambassador for the Redmond School District and I am so happy that Mary’s work is in the spotlight this month!”
Thank you, Mary, for your dedication and service to the students and team at Redmond High School!
