This week, Redmond athletes Max Hopper and Ryan Wellman are participating in an elite, one-of-a-kind camp, the Dusty Baker Baseball Camp in Rancho Cordova, California! Max will be entering his freshman year at Ridgeview High School and Ryan will be an 8th grader at Elton Gregory Middle School. Both athletes were nominated by Marc Horner, assistant principal of Elton Gregory Middle School to Gene Frechette, sponsor, former MLB scout and CEO of the camp.
The week-long camp focuses on skill and confidence development and is taught by several former MLB players and coaches. Its mission is, “To teach and develop skills that promote dedication and respect for the game of baseball, and to instill life-long lessons that are conducive towards strong character and integrity– key to achieving personal goals in the areas of academics, citizenship and athleticism.”
Both Max and Ryan were chosen for this camp based on their athleticism, exemplary academic performance and community involvement.
Max Hopper has held a 4.0 GPA and has played baseball since he was five. Max also volunteers and coaches for Redmond Area Parks & Recreation (RAPRD) baseball and basketball. He was awarded a full scholarship of $795 for the Dusty Baker camp.
“I am very appreciative and honored to be selected for this once in a lifetime experience,” shares Max. “I will represent the community of Redmond with integrity and hard work, and I’ll have fun while doing it. I’d like to thank Mr. Horner for making the nomination and Mr. Frechette for sponsoring me.”
Ryan has been playing baseball since he was a kindergarten student. He plays in RAPRD leagues as well as on a traveling team. Ryan is an all around athlete, participating in football, wrestling, basketball and baseball. He was awarded a partial scholarship of $400 to attend the camp.
Dan and Corrie Hopper shared with us, “We are thrilled Max has been given this incredible opportunity. We are very proud of him. He is a well rounded young man with a bright future ahead. This nomination and selection is very special to our family as Mr. Horner and Mr. Frechette saw his outstanding potential and strong character as well. Thank you!”
Congratulations to Max and Ryan for their hard work and for representing the Redmond community at the Dusty Baker Baseball Camp! We hope you enjoy the camp and have safe travels back home!
