Shawn Woods Named Chess Coach of the Year

Shawn Woods, chess coach and teacher at John Tuck Elementary (left in photo), was recently awarded Chess Coach of the Year by the Chess for Success Foundation in Portland!  Each year, the Chess for Success non-profit organization highlights the outstanding efforts of one individual during the state championship competition in Portland.

Shawn was selected among chess coaches from across the state of Oregon.  Here are a few of the nominations Chess for Success received for Shawn.

“I would love to recommend Shawn Woods.  He has done an awesome job with John Tuck Elementary. They have won the last 3 region tournaments and have consistently done great at the state tournament the last 2 years. Before that he was coaching at Lynch (not where he taught) and their club was a regional winner too. You really have to see the excitement he brings to our school regarding chess. He has 50+ and sometimes 60+ students attending his club. I have absolutely no doubts that he should get some sort of award for what he has done for our region in chess. He even runs the computer for me at regionals!”  – Dave Brouillard,

“Mr. Woods is a most deserving recipient of coach of the year. His enthusiasm for kids and the game of chess are contagious. He truly is the driving force behind the success our students have had and he encourages all students to participate no matter what their circumstances or experience levels are. We have students clamoring to be a part of our Chess for Success program because Mr. Woods makes it fun with his infectious energy and unique style of getting them excited about learning. The bottom line is, Mr. Woods is a positive difference maker in the lives of our young people who does it because he loves kids and will do whatever it takes to help them grow and be successful. We are extremely lucky to have Mr. Woods as an educator and chess coach extraordinaire on our team at John Tuck Elementary.”  – Dusty Porter, John Tuck Principal

Shawn has been a chess coach for the past six years (three years at Tuck and three years prior at M.A. Lynch Elementary).  He spends about 12 hours each month as a chess coach and clearly, his efforts are noticed by many.  Congratulations, Shawn, on this amazing achievement and thank you for your commitment to bring the game of chess to so many students in our district!
