The Redmond School District (RSD) is starting a Dual Language Immersion (DLI) program in fall 2017, Executive Director of Student Services Martha Hinman announced today.
A dual language immersion (DLI) program is a core educational program that offers academic content in two languages. RSD’s program will be taught in English and Spanish. The goal is for all students in the program to become bilingual and bi-literate while achieving at a high academic level and developing deeper cultural awareness.
A DLI classroom provides the same academic content and addresses the same standards as any other educational program. The program is open to all students, but will be limited to approximately 50 students for the 2017-18 school year, as determined by a lottery system.
“With over 300 programs nationwide and 79 in Oregon, dual immersion programs have proven to be successful and beneficial to student learning,” Hinman said. “We’re excited to begin a program in Redmond and bring English and Spanish speakers together to understand, speak and write fluently in English and Spanish, which is shown to increase critical thinking, creativity and problem-solving skills,” Hinman said.
The innovative learning model will begin at the kindergarten level for the 2017-18 school year at the Redmond Early Learning Center, starting with just two classrooms within the school. The program will then continue at Sage Elementary for grades one through five. The district hopes to grow the program into a K-12 model eventually, with approximately 50 students participating at each grade level.
The district is using funds from Oregon House Bill 3499 to begin its DLI program. Passed in 2015, the bill directs the Oregon Department of Education to develop and implement a statewide education plan for English Language Learners in the K-12 education system.
