Message from Superintendent Mike McIntosh

Good Morning Redmond School District:

Let me begin with a statement of gratitude for each and everyone of you. Day in and day out, you do much that contributes to the success of our kids. We are living in interesting and stressful times. It is during these times that we feel passionate and at the same time feel very fearful. Please accept this message as intended — to step into the building of unity, connection and shared voice in our District and community.

I stand opposed to any form of discrimination or injustice. That includes not just bias and prejudice around race, but any overt and nuanced practices that marginalize others based on poverty, gender or any other basis. My heart goes out to the child who encounters barriers of any kind that prevent or inhibit their success.

Schools play an important role in the stability of the community. Clearly, that stability was rocked when our Governor closed schools three months ago, and you all responded to support distance learning. You are resilient and amazing. We have strived to maintain …

RSD Team Spotlight: Christin Barnes

“I have been with Redmond School District for 9 years. I started as a Literacy Specialist at Tom McCall Elementary and then moved to Elton Gregory Middle School where I worked in the role of Athletic Secretary and now Student Success Coordinator. Before working for the district I volunteered at Tom McCall Elementary while I was a stay at home mom.

As the Student Success Coordinator I manage our Reset Room and In School Suspension. Our Reset Room is a place for students to come “reset” their minds and bodies so they are ready to be an active & engaged learner. The reset room is a safe space where a student can come to work through the stresses and frustrations of their day. I work with students, staff and families to support the student’s overall success. I’ve been referred to as the “at school mom,” and to me that is the best job title ever!

What I enjoy most about my job is building relationships! The relationships that I build with the students, their families and the staff at EGMS are the greatest reward! …

Redmond School District Prepares to Lower Class Size in Primary Grades

Hello Redmond School District community,

Redmond School District is poised to make a significant investment to improve opportunities and outcomes for our students through the use of funds generated by the Student Success Act.

These investments are strongly informed by stakeholder input. In the fall of 2019 the District launched a comprehensive community engagement process to listen to students, parents, community members and local community leaders as to what is working and what needs improvement in our schools. The District engaged in conversations with students, parents and community members in 20 different listening sessions. In addition, the district conducted surveys with more than 700 respondents to identify what our community prioritizes in regards to education. One of the strong themes that emerged from this process is that our community greatly values smaller class sizes, a key priority of the Student Success Act.

After listening to the community’s feedback our plan is to prioritize investment of some of the Student Success Act funds toward class size reduction. We are currently exploring what a class size reduction will look like in the …

RSD Team Spotlight: IEP Specialist Team

This Team Member Spotlight features the District’s IEP Specialist Team! Students who are enrolled in Special Education services must have an Individualized Education Plan. An IEP is more than just a written legal document (or “plan”). It lays out the program of special education instruction, supports and services kids need to make progress and thrive in school.

Case managers (special education teachers) at each school manage average case loads ranging from 6-11 students (those with very high needs) up to 35-40, depending on the student’s needs. In the past, these case managers were responsible for the entire IEP process. This includes referral, evaluation, eligibility then even writing the IEP. The district started to review how long it took these case managers to write IEPs for students with learning disabilities and when they were doing the work. Case managers were often spending time outside of work hours or time during the day that would be student contact time completing paperwork and writing IEPs.

The District’s Student Services Department assembled a team of people from across the district, including administrators and teachers, to address the problem. This team visited Medford School District who had created a model for IEP …

StepUp Program Receives $40,000 Donation from City Center Church to Fund School Playground

Redmond School District’s StepUp Program has received a $40,000 donation from City Center Church to fund a school playground.

StepUP serves students from ages kindergarten through 21 in a diverse set of programs. These include StepUP Transition, NextSTEPS and social-emotional learning programs for students K-12. The program is based at the Edwin Brown Education Center, a facility that was built in 1950 that is currently without a school playground.

City Center Church donated the funds to StepUP to provide a school playground on the school’s existing campus. The school hopes to begin building the playground by the summer of 2020.

“Last year when our community partner, City Center Church asked what we really needed, we never thought that we would be able to receive such a generous gift to make that dream a reality so quickly,” said Karen Mitchell, StepUP Principal. “Not only has City Center Church helped us to fully fund the playground equipment that we need, but throughout the year they provide generous donations …
