Proficient learning is best supported when students have a clear understanding of what they are learning.

Teachers use standards to develop explicitly taught learning targets pinpointing essential skills and concepts that students must master to be proficient in life and at the next level of learning.

Students are engaged actively and cognitively at levels required for proficient learning. Learning activities and assessments are authentic and relevant (connection to real world).

Students have ongoing access to their own achievement data and make use of that data to engage actively in the pursuit of their own learning goals.
